DENTAL DISEASE PREVENTION

HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR PET TO HELP PREVENT THE ONSET OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE:

STEP 1: Visit Your Veterinarian

Every regular exam in our clinic includes a thorough dental exam. If we find signs of disease, we will recommend a treatment plan. It is important for the overall health of your pet that we take care of any dental problems we may find.

STEP 2: Start an Oral Care Routine at Home

Ideally, plaque should be removed from your pet's teeth daily before it mineralizes into tartar. The best thing you can do for your pet's teeth is to brush them daily with a PET-SPECIFIC toothpaste. Specifically designed for domesticated pets, the toothpaste contains enzymes and ingredients which targets bacteria that causes dental decay. There are many styles of toothbrushes out on the market for small and large cats and dogs. In certain instances, a child's toothbrush can be sufficient enough to reach those problematic, hard to reach areas. 

Another option of preventative dental care that can happen at home is feeding your pet specially formulated foods that help reduce the accumulation of tartar and plaque on the teeth. Purina and Hills both make specific diets for dental care, where the size and texture of the kibble aid in the breakdown of plaque and tartar. These diets not only support a healthy mouth, but are also nutritionally complete, providing your pet with the balanced diet they require.

Lastly, treats or toys that stimulate and aid in the cleaning of the teeth are also beneficial. 

STEP 3: Schedule Regular Dental Checkups 

We monitor the progress of your pet's preventitive program, so regular dental checkups are essential, just as we keep to our semi-annual dental cleanings. For pets that form tartar quickly or have a history of oral problems, more frequent examinations may be advised. We want to ensure that your pet stays happy and healthy throughout their days.
